Not even trying to be scary

Every October the same handful of costumes shows up at the door. A dragon breathing tissue-paper fire, Frankenstein's monster doing the arms-out walk because someone told him to, a mummy who's already come a little unwound since the driveway, a vampire in a bow tie who's much too polite to be scary, and a little spider nobody invited. They show up every year, a little different and exactly the same, the dragon's cape held together with a safety pin this time, the vampire's bow tie a little crooked. We made a pen for the whole trick-or-treat parade.
