Sjögren’s (SHOW-grins) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which an individual’s white blood cells attack their moisture-producing glands. It is the 2nd most prevalent rheumatic autoimmune disease striking as many as four million Americans. This makes it three times more common than better known related diseases such as Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis. Sjögren's affects the entire body. Along with symptoms of extensive dryness, other serious complications include profound fatigue, chronic pain, major organ involvement, neuropathies and lymphomas with some patients experiencing debilitating symptoms that greatly impair their functioning and quality of life. Unfortunately, Sjögren's remains relatively unknown and is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with the average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis being 3.5 years.
Founded in 1983, the Sjögren's Syndrome Foundation (SSF) is the only national non-profit dedicated to fighting Sjögren's and improving the lives of those living with the disease. The SSF’s mission is to educate patients and their families about Sjögren's, increase public and professional awareness of Sjögren's and encourage research into new treatments and a cure.
