A PenGems pen is not a typical writing instrument. It's a beautiful object. A crystal-packed chamber, finished chrome hardware, a barrel that catches light the way fine jewelry does. And like fine jewelry, it rewards a little care.
Not a lot of care. We're not talking about complicated upkeep or a weekly ritual. Think of it more like the instincts you bring to a favorite piece of costume jewelry: gentle handling, thoughtful storage, a wipe-down when it needs one.
Here's what that looks like in practice.
If you've ever owned a beautiful piece of crystal jewelry (a brooch, a hair piece, a statement necklace), you already know the instincts that apply here.
Those instincts are exactly right for a PenGems pen. Everything that follows is an expansion of them.
The crystals in a PenGems pen are not mounted on the outside of the barrel. They live inside a clear chamber at the top half of the pen, packed in tightly, a dense, jewel-colored window sealed into the pen. At the very top, a rose cut glass crystal sits in the end cap: faceted on top, flat on the bottom, catching light like a small decorative stone in a piece of jewelry.
This is good news for care purposes. The fill crystals are sealed in and protected. You're not working around delicate prongs or surface settings. You're caring for the outside of that clear chamber, the chrome hardware, and the metal barrel below. The crystals handle themselves.
The best tool for cleaning a PenGems pen is a soft cloth. Microfiber is ideal, the kind used on eyeglasses or phone screens. Wipe the acrylic chamber gently along its length to clear fingerprints and oil. Same approach for the barrel. Work along the pen, not in circles.
If you want a bit more cleaning power on the acrylic, a jewelry wipe (the pre-moistened kind sold for crystal earrings and bracelets) works well. Gentle formula, good results.
For the chrome hardware (the clip, the tip, the rose cut gem at the top), a dry cloth buffed gently does the job. Chrome is a baked-in finish. You're not going to damage it with a cloth.
What to avoid: anything liquid sprayed directly onto the pen, any submersion, alcohol-based cleaners or hand sanitizer (which can cloud acrylic over time), and anything abrasive like paper towels.
Day-to-day: A pen holder or stand is ideal: upright, not pressing against other objects. If you keep pens in a cup, make sure nothing harder is pressing against the acrylic.
In a bag: A pen loop, a small pouch, or the pen slot of a planner. Loose in a bag pocket, surrounded by keys and coins, is the fastest way to pick up surface scratches on the acrylic. Avoid it.
Long-term: The box your pen came in is excellent for this. If you're storing a pen you're not currently using, the original packaging protects both the acrylic and the barrel finish.
Temperature: Avoid leaving your pen in extended heat: a car on a summer day, near a heat vent. Room temperature is always ideal.
The clear chamber that houses the crystals is durable but not immune to surface scratches, the same way any clear acrylic object picks up fine marks over time with rough handling. The scratches don't affect the pen's function, but they can slightly haze the window.
Prevention is easy: soft cloth for cleaning, something protective for bag carry. If the acrylic does pick up light surface scratches over time, a plastic polish like Novus No. 1 (made for eyeglass frames and clear plastics) can restore clarity. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and buff gently.
When the ink runs low, the pen refills with a standard cartridge: easy to source, easy to swap. Unscrew carefully and replace the refill. The pen is built to last; the refill is the only part that changes.
A well-cared-for PenGems pen lasts for years. The writing mechanism is reliable and refillable. The crystals, sealed safely inside the acrylic, continue to catch the light the way they did the day you first opened the box.
Treat it like the beautiful thing it is, and it will behave like one.
